Getting Started with Dodgeball: A Quick Guide for Beginners

What is Dodgeball?

Dodgeball is an energetic, fast-paced game where two teams compete to eliminate each other by throwing soft balls. Players aim to hit opponents while dodging incoming throws, using strategy, speed, and teamwork to stay in the game.

In New Zealand, dodgeball is growing rapidly as a competitive and social sport, with leagues for all ages and skill levels.

The Basics

The Court: Dodgeball is played on a rectangular court split into two sides, with several balls (foam or cloth) placed along the centre line.

Objective: Hit opponents with a ball or catch their throws to eliminate them, while avoiding being hit yourself.

Winning: Each round is won by the team with players remaining on the court. Matches are decided by the team that scores the most points after all rounds are complete.

How to Play

1. Form Teams: Typically, each team has six players.

2. Starting Positions: Teams start with their feet behind their back boundary line.

3. Game Start: When the referee signals, players can run to grab balls from the centre line. Balls must be brought behind the activation line before they can be thrown.

4. Throwing: Hit an opponent with a ball to eliminate them. Aim carefully, and remember, hitting a player’s body or clothing counts.

5. Dodging: Keep moving! Quick reflexes help you avoid getting hit.

6. Blocking: Use a held ball to stop incoming throws. Be aware—blocked balls remain live and can still result in eliminations.

7. Catching: Catch an opponent’s throw, and the thrower is out. Bonus: the last player your team lost can return to the game!

Tips for New Players

  • Accuracy Over Strength: A well-aimed throw is usually more effective than a powerful one.

  • Stay Light on Your Feet: Agility is key—move quickly to dodge and block.

  • Teamwork Matters: Communicate with your teammates to coordinate attacks and defense.
